Q: What is IPB Message Checker?
A: IPB Message Checker is a tool for notification about new posts on
discussion boards based on Invision Power Board engine.
Q: What is Invision Power Board (also known as IPB)?
A: Invision Power Board is a popular discussion board software written in PHP. You
can find more on its website http://www.invisionpower.com/.
Q: How does IPB Message Checker work?
A: IPB Message Checker periodically checks the bulletin board for new
posts. It works the same as the web browser when user checks for new posts
manually. IPB Message Checker makes login with provided user id and password hash
using cookie authentication. Then it makes a HTTP request to get new posts and
parses the obtained result. If necessary the request will be repeated until all
new posts are retrieved or configured limit is reached.
Q: How can I check that my discussion board is based on Invision engine?
A: Usually you can see it at the bottom of each discussion board page. The page
should have a copyright string like 'Invision Power Board v2.1.5 © 2006 IPS, Inc.'.
But in some cases this string may be removed by administrators of the disscussion board.
In this case the best way is to ask administrators or moredators for help.
Q: What is Microsoft .NET Framework and why it is required to run IPB
Message Checker?
A: The .NET Framework is a development and execution environment that allows
different programming languages & libraries to work together seamlessly to create
Windows-based applications that are easier to build, manage, deploy, and integrate
with other networked systems. IPB Message Checker is written using C#.NET so it requires
Microsoft .NET Framework v.1.1 to run.
Q: Where can I get the Microsoft .NET Framework?
A: You can download the Microsoft .NET Framework v.1.1 directly from the
Microsoft website. It is completely free to download and install.
Operation systems supported: Windows 98/ME/NT/2000/XP.
Q: What URL should I provide in IPB Message Checker configuration?
A: It must be the root path of the discussion board. The root path of the discussion board
points to the web server directory, where the file 'index.php' is located.
It could be in different forms, but most popular are
http://forum.somedomain.com or
http://www.somedomain.com/forum.
Q: Does IPB Message Checker work with several discussion boards
simultaneously?
A: No, it doesn't. This is a limitation of the freeware version.
Q: IPB Message Checker doesn’t work properly with my discussion board
based on Invision Power Board engine. Why? What can I do to fix the problem?
A: IPB Message Checker works with standard installation of the Invision
Power Board software. If discussion board administrators installed some mods or have changed
something in HTML templates then IPB Message Checker can fail to parse board's pages. If you
still want to use IPB Message Checker with customized discussion board then feel free to
send us an email with description of the problem. IPB Message Checker v.1.6 (1.0.0.6) will
support customization of the discussion board.
Q: Does IPB Message Checker support other message board engines?
A: No, it doesn't because of its name ;-). Support of the other popular discussion
board engines will be announced later in the other software product.
